Annually more than 15,000 seagoing vessels sail on the “Nieuwe Waterweg”. However, for some vessels, the river is too shallow. The Port of Rotterdam has therefore started preparations for the deepening of the “Nieuwe Waterweg” and the Botlek.
“The New Water should be half meters deep, over a length of twenty-five kilometers,” said Edwin Hupkes project manager at the Port Authority. The requested authorization from the Hoek van Holland to the Benelux tunnel the New Waterway average 16.30 meters deep. “Because ships can carry more cargo, trading is cheaper.”
